Bluefin Assault rifle- colours by dukeleto Bluefin Assault rifle- colours by dukeleto
updated, vector version of my favourite small arms design.

NATO 5.56 Assault rifle, loaded from a 50 round horizontal mag above the barrel. Breech is above the pistol grip, ejection behind it.

To load, the magazine is released by pulling back the rear sight unit firmly, which unlocks the upper dust cover, spring-loaded and hinged at the front, and pushes out the spent mag. The new mag is seated in guides in the dust cover, and locked down into the breech. As shown here [link]

Not to criticize but pulling back on the rear sight will throw it off and effect accuracy

Not if it's solid enough. The Valmet & Galil series of successors to the AK mount sights on the removable dusk cover, but they don't lose zero because they have a much more robust hinge & lock than the AK.

I prefer larger calibers, such as 20x102mm or 30x173mm (used with the rifles from my storybook).

this one isn't PMG, it's a vector illustration done in Inkscape. It was originally a PMG design, which you can see elsewhere in my gallery.

Hi, thanks for your interest. Ordinarily I'm quite happy for people to use my designs, but the Bluefin is my favourite, so I'm pretty protective of it! If you give me normal credit in any photos you post, and link me when you've finished, then cool, go ahead.

If you want my advice, I'd recommend not having the magazine ejection require pulling on the rear sight, if you were to not have the sight on the weapon during combat it could pose a problem, also the repeated stress on it could cause more fragile sights to break. Maybe a separate handle could be used instead? Otherwise, the design is great, especially for lefties like me that like bullpups, but have to worry about the spent shells ejecting in your face.

thanks, very much. That is a problem that occurred to me, as well as having the sights mounted on a moving parts effecting the zero, I simply explain that it's all VERY sturdy construction.

excellent design, though it should be flipped horizontally due to the fact that the majority of soldiers are right handed and the cock on this gun is pulled with the right hand in its current state, meaning that one would aim with the left

I think this rifle looks simply amazing, but if I may offer a fair and detailed critique, I think you would be interested from a "realistic" perspective on whether or not this is actually feasible/possible. I have done a small edit to your rifle, with line art depicting the necessary dimensions for your internal parts, which will show where the dimensional conflicts, based on your description, are present. I appreciate you taking the time to do that, and your crits are largely fair. The issues with the chamber, ejection and the cyclone feed are partially addressed by the fact that they are both further back than you assumed, as Lemmonade says, behind the pistol grip. I'm sure they'd still be very cramped, but perhaps it'd still be possible.

I was always aware of how wide the upper receiver would be, and I have to say it caused me some worry, in the end tho, I drew a front elevation, and it didn't look too bad. Unconventional yes, but not impossible.

The problem of the rail and sights being mounted on a moving component also occurred to me, but I assumed that if the hinge and lock were sufficiently robust, there wouldn't be any problems with zero. I could be wrong, of course, but I believe there are precedents.

The apparent conflict with the stock and bolt is another serious worry, but presumably the stock would be hollow anyway, it could be constructed to telescope AROUND the return spring and bolt, right?

Anyway, thanks again. I'm very glad of the informed input on my favourite design!

Your welcome for the critique man :) However, I'm pretty sure they can't be moved back farther, without the magazine being lengthened as well. Your feed port has to be right at the bottom of the magazine, which is where I drew it. So in order for those components to all be moved back farther, your magazine would have to as well, which would upset your entire top design.

The thickness could be an issue, but I'd have to see it in living dimensions in order for me to critique that further, as there are many "fat" rifles out there.

As far as the hinge is concerned, it all depends on how tight you want it, and how often you want to re-tighten it. Is it pinned in place, or screwed? This will make a big difference as screws will get loose, but pins will not be easily removed for maintenance. Pins will be more secure in the long run.

Also with the stock, it did cross my mind that the components could be housed inside a shroud that the stock telescopes around, but you would still need a pretty sizable cutout underneath so it wouldn't interfere with ejection. Also, the components that would allow it to telescope would have to be illustrated externally somewhere, because there would not be room inside for a ratchet system to extend and contract it. (the locking studs on the front side lead me to believe it's being secured from the inside)

Anyway, I like this design a lot. Maybe I'll 3D it for you, and see what you think. If I have the time, I'll throw in the dimensional fixes and send it your way :)

You could use an extremely short bolt carrier group, shorter than a 5.56mm cartridge, and maybe pull off the desired ejection.

You'll still blow up because you can't accommodate a 5.56mm chamber, though.

The design is a very interesting one. The only real criticism I have is the ammo choice. The NATO 5.56 round is a very common round, but when placed in a horizontal loading magazine, the rounds tend to jam rather easily due to the elongated nature of the round itself. If you look more into the P90, you'll see that it uses a more traditional round tip bullet.....

Yes, very technical, I know. Just food for thought. Anyway, if you would like to discuss this more, feel free to drop me a note or something on my page. Keep up the good work.
